Re: Prune Blueberries

Consider the age and size of your plant before pruning your bushes. Many of the compact varieties, like Top Hat and Sunshine Blue, do not require pruning. What is needed is grooming or cleaning off old, dying or weak branches and  foliage.  Plants require a few years' growth before enough branching develops to produce the berries. Plants can live to 50-60 years, and might need pruning only after the fifth year. If some branches tangle into the center of the shrub, it is good to prune it off. Space plants so that there is enough distance between, to avoid having to prune branches that grow into each other. The best time is after fruiting.
