asparagus

I planted aspargus for the first time last fall.  I know that I can't harvest is at least the first year.  I was told tolet it come up and 'fern out', but I don't know when to cut thefern or ifI do.  Can someone that has raised asparagus tell me how long to leave the ferns before cutting them or do I ever cut them? Thanks for you help.

Re: asparagus

I just let mine do their thing.  A little weeding here and there to keep things under control.  I usually clean out the ferns in early winter.  It may take a couple years until you can harvest it, but it will be so worth it! Fresh homegrown asparagus is so much more flavorful than store-bought!

Re: asparagus

Leave the ferns until they  yellow and die down in the fall. Use a side dressing of an organic fertilizer mid spring. The better you take care of the plants this year they more productive they will be next year
