Perennials compatible with Ponderosa Pine

There is a 30' Ponderosa pine in our front yard (currently grass).  I would like to replace the grass with a variety of perennials that will be compatible with the Ponderosa.  I am tired of being a "slave" to watering, mowing, and raking pine needles.  What perennials (preferably drought tolerant) would you recommend?  We are at 6,000 ft.

You will still need to work some organic matter(compost) in the soil.  It is tough area, but you may be able to grow some Japanese ferns, Epimediums, Hosta and Heucheras. I do have to warn you this in not the best environment so all plants will struggle.
