How to Grow
Before transfer to garden, acclimate plants to outdoor conditions by moving to a sheltered place outside for a week. Transplant to the garden after all danger of frost, and space plants at least 8" apart. Nicotiana grows best in rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade. Keep the soil moist during periods with high temperatures and dry conditions.
Large nicotianas are fine plants for the back of the garden; use dwarf types as edging plants, or grow them in mixed plantings of other sun-loving annuals such as petunias. You can also combine them with perennials such as hardy geraniums, delphiniums, and dwarf asters. Dwarf nicotianas make nice container plants as well. Nicotianas are excellent cut flowers, and all types attract moths and hummingbirds.
